October STEM DAY
Our October STEM DAY was October 3rd from 10:00-12:00am. Thank you Ms. Dislen for volunteering. Students were challenged to make the tallest stable tower they could with 25 gumdrops and 50 toothpicks. They worked in groups of 4. It was a great opportunity for students to collaborate and work on a project together. The goal of STEM is to problem solve. We also had a guest speaker who talked about how he used science, technology, engineering, and math in his job. He was a mechanical engineer at Kimberly Clark.
Students went through the Engineering Design Model which is Ask, Imagine, Research, Plan, Create, Improve. We started our STEM Day by listening to Mr. Pinnock read Iggy Peck Architect.
Our next STEM DAY will be the first Friday in November. We hope to see you there!
We're Back!
I apologize for the lack of updates on our website. Since the teacher workday I have not had dependable internet service. Thankfully, our wonderful tech specialist was able to do some work on my computer (remove 2 viruses) and get it back to working condition.
Here's a quick run down of what we have been learning and what we are working on this week.
Writing:
Students completed their final narratives. We went through the writing process: brainstorming, writing it down, editing, making it better, and publishing. Students wrote about their best day ever or their worst day. Students' published their work on their padlet. To hear your child read their writing go to www.padlet.com/daugherty/typechild'sname. You will be prompted to enter a password. It is your child's birthday MMDDYYYY. Feel free to share with extended family members too! Guests can leave a comment back for students to see.
We are now learning about informational writing. Last week, the class researched and wrote about spiders. This work is hanging in our classroom. Today students brainstormed all the topics they know about. For the remainder of the week, students will choose a topic and write 3 facts about that topic. The class is working on writing 3 sentences with capitals, spaces, and periods. Words should have beginning and end sounds. Please practice these skills at home too.
Reading
The past 2 weeks students completed the Unit 1 reading assessment. Students were asked to identify letters, sounds, beginning sounds of words, sight words, rhyming words and distinguish between a letter, word and sentence. More information on how your child did will be on his/her signed papers that go home Thursday. Please remember to sign the cover and return the entire packet. This week students are working on letter P centers, stamping sight words, reading leveled books, and working with the -ap word family.
Math
Student have been working on writing numbers 0-10, counting objects, and counting orally by tens and ones to 100. Last week, students worked on counting on. For example, if I say 6 they would respond 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. They do not need to start at one. We also worked on identifiying the number that is one more and one less.
This week I am competing our Unit 2 math assessment. A copy of your child's rubric will be in the signed papers in 2 weeks as we will not complete the testing by this Thursday. Please practice skills as needed.
Social Studies
Students finished studying Christoper Columbus. We learned Columbus find a way from the Old World Europe to the New World of the Americas. It was a mistake to find the Americas. He was trying to find a shortcut around the world to India. He didn't give up in asking for help for ships to explore. He was not very nice to the people already living in the Americas. He took their land and spread germs that made others sick. The Native Americans and Columbus did trade items and introduce new materials from their worlds. Brainpopjr.com has a great short video clip that summarizes this information.
Science
Last week, we began our motion unit. Students can define motion (something moving). Motion happens by a force that is a push or a pull. Students sorted pictures of pushes and pulls. Review if needed. Last Friday, we experimented with cars and force. More force=more motion. We also brainstormed different ways to move a ball and a black bean.
This week we will continue learning about motion. Students will complete a venn diagram of push and pull images. They will also complete an obstacle course where students will demonstrate different directions of motion (around and around, spin, zigzag, straight, curved, back and forth, etc). On Friday, we will begin our Veteran's Day unit.
